“All glory, laud, and honor to you redeemer king.” Hymn 108, LBW
We’re nearing the culmination of our Lenten journey. We’re about to enter Holy Week and then Easter Sunday. Hallelujah! On recent Sundays we’ve listened to lengthy lessons from the Hebrew Scriptures and from the Gospels. Our rotation of clergy has related how these stories of old hold eternal truths that very much apply to today. There have been tales of outsiders being accepted, the blind gaining sight, and the dead being resuscitated.
On Wednesdays we’ve not only enjoyed good soup and fellowship but learned about our faith by studying portions of the Augsburg Confession. Individually, we’ve prayed and found time for introspection. Collectively, we’ve prayed and worked to help our neighbors and each other.
Twentieth century notables Steinbeck, Kerouac, and Kuralt all related stories of the road, the literal and spiritual road, traveling mostly on their own, but sometimes with their canine friend or other companion. Like these story tellers of decades back, we’ve been on our own journey. Our journey has been a pilgrimage of faith and spiritual growth. Yes, undoubtedly there are times when the physical road can help facilitate spiritual reflection and growth. Getting away can free one’s mind and change one’s perspective. Similarly, breaking from our normal routines and finding special times to interact, work, worship, and pray also helps free us on the path of insight and growth in faith.
As we near the finish of this season’s travel, we will pause and gather during Holy Week on Maundy Thursday at six pm, again on Good Friday at 12:15 and, of course, with special joy and thanksgiving on Easter Sunday. Check...for more specifics on dates, times and events. I pray your Lenten journey has been a good one. In truth, all of life is a journey where with the Spirit’s and fellow believers’ help, we may grow closer to God and each other and as a result grow in faith, hope, and love. We’ve all seen and been troubled by the animosity, division, and strife taking place in our nation and on our planet. Our world, our Lord’s creation, needs believers, people of sound moral character, compassion and faith now more than ever. We need each other and we need Him, our risen Lord.
“He is not here: for he is risen,” Matthew 28:6 KJV
“Now thank we all our God With hearts and hands and voices…” Hymn34, LBW
